Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
